Antique Wooden Exterior Storm / Screen Door

Description

This is a very nice antique wooden storm / screen door. I'm not sure but I assume this door is made from poplar wood. This door comes complete with both inserts - the glass storm door inserts and the screen door inserts. The glass is fine with no cracks or chips, the screens, although not torn, should be replaced. The height of this door is approximately 79 3/4 inches. The width is approximately 31 5/8 inches. Measuring the door for square it is 85 1/2 inches and 85 3/4 inches, just about a 1/4 inch out of being perfectly square. The exterior of the door has been painted brown in color while the interior of the door still retains its original varnish finish.
Please Note
: the issue with this door is that it is not symmetrical - the latch side of the door has been trimmed, it is approximately 3 inches in width while the hinge side of the door is approximately 4 inches in width. I have encountered this before on vintage wooden storm / screen doors. Briefly, the door is trimmed to fit the rough opening and instead of trimming both sides equally only one side is trimmed. Thus, depending on what level of restoration you care to take will determine if you should replace the stiles. Personally, the stiles need to be replaced to make the door symmetrical and a true show piece as you enter the house. In it's current configuration this door will fit a 32 inch rough opening. Replacing the stiles not only would make the door symmetrical and a perfect fit for a 32 inch rough opening but replacing the stiles would give the buyer the opportunity to widen the door to fit a 34 inch rough opening or even a 36 inch rough opening. Another reason for changing the stiles is, as you can see the lock set and hinges are not period correct for this door and thus should be changed out, replaced stiles would make this possible. This door is quite different and unique from other vintage doors I have seen in the past. The cam locks for the inserts are actually levers and not locks and the stiles and rails have joint points for added strength I presume. These original vintage wooden storm doors with both inserts are extremely difficult to find but please remember that nail holes, minor dings and splits and cracks should be expected. Also note, the bottom of the door has been filed (see picture 10). This filing is not major but I feel needs to be mentioned. Personally, if I were restoring this door I would have the stiles professionally replaced, in this way there are no imperfections or patches. I would then strip the door and change out the lock set and hinges to a more period correct set. A door of this vintage and quality needs to be stained and varnished, not painted. The lock set and hinges need to reflect the beauty of this door and the only way to achieve this is to replace the stiles. I’ve had the same situation, where only one stile was trimmed on a vintage storm door. Fortunately there is a lumber yard in my area with a top notch mill and they replaced the stile and the door looks the way it should. As I stated earlier these vintage wood doors are worth saving. Thanks
