2 ANTIQUE CHINESE COMPOSITION CHARACTER DOLLS FISHERMAN & OLD MAN W/ UMBRELLA

Description

These two “character” doll were made in China around 1920 or before.  The composition or paper mache elements are in truly wonderful condition.  You most often see stress cracks or complete deterioration of the faces on dolls such as these, but not so here.  The faces on the characters are in near pristine condition. Amazingly, the taller tall, old man with umbrella doll, still has his wire rim glasses.  The smaller fisherman has his hat and his freshly caught carp.  He has no bamboo pole, but this shouldn’t be hard to come by–there are slim bamboo bar-be-cue skewers fairly readily available at kitchen stores which should pass nicely. The tall man wears silk pajamas; the fisherman is decked out in a grass cloak and hat (with some typical losses).  Both dolls have spring arms for a little animation. The taller doll measures 14" tall; the fisherman measures 10" tall.
